When we conduct research in order to construct an outstanding, thoroughly researched paper, it's important to be able to discern which sources are valid and which are not. You will want to make sure your sources are scholarly and reliable. The readings this week will guide you through steps you can take to make sure that your sources are reliable and suitable to be included in a college-level research paper.
Examples of NON-reliable sources:
- Any social media site such as Facebook or Twitter.
- Wikipedia.
- Websites that do not contain fact-based evidence to back up their claims.
Tasks:
- Do Practices in Grammar Assignment FIRST!
- Read the Lumen Learning sections on Evaluating Sources and properly using quotes from your sources within your papers.
- Watch videos
- Post to the discussion Forum.
- Complete the Source Evaluation Questionnaire - Please note, this is the only required assignment for this week.
-
Research is not simply choosing a topic and then researching. It is much more circular and requires research into the topic to choose a good topic that will work for the assignment. This video explains the process.

The readings this week focus on properly citing references and creating annotated bibliographies. There is also a section on how to avoid plagiarism. I've also included to PowerPoint presentation I give to my face to face classes that goes into deeper detail regarding how to avoid plagiarising a document.
One common way that students unintentionally plagiarise their papers is by not realizing that every citation that you list on your works cited page MUST be included within the text and vise versa. Make sure that you carefully proofread so that all of your in-text citations are listed on your works cited page, and every work cited is included within the body of the text.
Tasks for this week:
- Read the material on Citing and Referencing Techniques.
- Read through the What is Plagiarism presentation.
- Post to the Discussion Forum.
- Complete writing a thesis statement assignment.
- Complete annotated bibliography.
- Complete plagiarism assignment.
-
LBCC takes plagiarism very seriously, and the consequences for plagiarising a text include failing the assignment, failing the class, and/or expulsion from LBCC. Please make sure you are familiar with what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.

This week, we'll explore how to structure an academic research paper and some pre-drafting tools to help keep your paper organized. The typical organizing structure is the multi-tiered outline. A different type of organizing structure is the storyboard. We will look at both and have an opportunity to experiment with which type of organizing structure works best. Lumen Learning mentions a lot of assignments that I am NOT requiring you to do. Only complete the assignments that I have specifically assigned.
Tasks for this week:
- Read materials in Lumen Learning on Structuring and Outlining.
- Read Ch. 9 in The Craft of Research.
- Watch video
- Post to the Discussion Forum.
- Complete the Organizing Your Research assignment.
